Smart Textiles & E-Textiles: Embroidering Electronics Directly into Fabric
Smart textiles – also known as e-textiles – are textiles with integrated electronics: they light up, heat, respond to touch or capture body signals. With ZSK embroidery machines, conductive yarn, LED sequins, sensors and circuit boards are embroidered directly into the fabric. Getting started with your own ZSK embroidery machine
Already own a ZSK embroidery machine? Then you can get started with smart textiles straight away. The starter kits with conductive yarn for the F-head and K-head contain proven yarns and a test embroidery file. ZSK LED sequins are designed for automatic processing on ZSK embroidery machines and are attached and connected in the same step. The E-Tex Board controls touch sensors and LEDs without additional components. If you would like to start step by step, choose the DIY kit for the Embroidered Piano. For sensing and biosignals, development kits with nine moss-embroidered electrodes each are available: they can be used as touch sensors or to capture ECG and EMG signals, and they work without conductive gel.
What embroidered electronics can do
The e-textile demonstrators show on a small scale what technical embroidery makes possible: a piano with embroidered keys, a Smart Dashboard that detects touch even through leather, or a cushion with LED clusters that light up when touched. Embroidered conductive tracks remain soft and flexible and are washable. Because the embroidery machine places and connects components automatically, you can move from one-off samples to series production.

Workshops for beginners, companies and universities
In one-day workshops, you learn how to embroider heating elements, LEDs, sensors, microcontrollers and RFID antennas into textiles and connect them securely. Each workshop combines the fundamentals of electrical engineering with hands-on embroidery on ZSK machines; materials and a take-home sample are included. What are smart textiles?
Smart textiles, also called e-textiles or electronic textiles, are textiles with an integrated electronic function. They can light up, heat, detect touch or capture signals – for example in sportswear, medical textiles, vehicle interiors or protective workwear.
Can I make smart textiles on my ZSK embroidery machine?
Yes. Conductive yarn can be used on the F-head as both upper and bobbin thread, and on the K-head in moss and chain stitch. The starter kits for the F-head and K-head contain suitable yarns and a test embroidery file.
Which conductive yarn is suitable?
High-speed embroidery requires conductive yarns with high tensile strength and abrasion resistance. Silver-coated yarns from Madeira and Amann have proven themselves – they are included in our starter kits.
Are embroidered e-textiles washable?
Yes. Embroidered conductive tracks withstand washing and mechanical stress; overstitching with non-conductive thread provides additional protection and insulation. If required, 3E Smart Solutions supports washing tests to recognised standards.
