How Puffy Foam Adds Depth to Embroidery

Puffy foam is used when embroidery should stand out visibly and feel raised. During stitching, the foam is placed on the textile and covered with dense satin stitches. The needle perforates the foam along the stitch edges, allowing the excess material to be torn away cleanly after embroidery. What remains is a raised embroidered area with the typical 3D puff effect.

For a clean result, the embroidery file needs to be created for 3D embroidery with puffy foam. Important factors include sufficient stitch density and suitable stitch direction, so the foam is properly perforated and can be removed cleanly after stitching.

Würker 3D Puffy Foam - Characteristics

Würker 3D Puffy Foam is made from EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate), is 3 mm thick and comes in sheets measuring 280 × 280 mm. Each pack contains 10 individual sheets. The format fits common embroidery hoop sizes up to 10″ × 10″ and can be used directly in many applications without additional cutting.

Two hardness grades are available for different applications. The harder 75D puffy foam keeps sharp edges during embroidery and is particularly suitable for bold logos, lettering, caps and badges. The softer 38D version suits lighter textiles and can also be used in multiple layers for a stronger 3D effect.

The six colours white, black, red, yellow, green and blue can be selected to match the thread colour. This helps prevent a contrasting foam colour from showing through at edges, gaps or lightly stitched areas. Typical applications include 3D logos on caps, raised lettering on teamwear, dimensional badges and bold designs on sweatshirts, jackets and club apparel.
